It starts as one thread

Every polo begins as one continuous strand of long staple organic cotton, spun in a single length so the shirt has no joins to fail at.

Then it learns to loop

The strand is fed into a flat bed machine and looped through itself, again and again, at a gauge slow enough to keep the fibre unbroken.

Enough loops make pique: a waffled surface that holds its shape, breathes in heat and stops the shirt clinging after an hour of wear.

The collar is knitted flat to its finished shape rather than cut from a panel, which is the only reason it still stands up after fifty washes.

Three mother of pearl buttons are set by hand, the placket is pressed once, and the shirt is garment dyed whole so the colour sits deep in the fibre.

The run is dyed in five baths and each bath is mixed once. Pick the colour and the shirt on the left changes with it.

240 gsm pique, 14 gauge

Waffled pique at 240 grams holds a shape that jersey never keeps. It is the weight that makes a polo read as a shirt.
Knitted in northern Portugal

Knitted on flat bed machines in Guimaraes by a family mill that has run the same beds since 1978.
Garment dyed, 14 hour bath

Dyed as a finished garment across a 14 hour bath, which sets the colour deep enough to survive the shirt.
